Monday wild card

Gary Ingram: Geeze DFO, how much vacation do you get each year? I've been in the wrong business. it appears.

DaveT: DFO, you're starting to remind of Johnny Carson, 3 weeks on, 4 weeks off. Enjoy yourself and the relatives.

DFO: I'll take these statements as compliments that I'll be missed? Actually, I'll be taking only my third week off for the year next week. The fourth comes at the end of August. And the fifth at the end of December. After 22 years in one place, I figure I've earned 5 weeks. Blogmeister KenP did a nice job filling in last time by posting 3 or 4 items per day, so you guys can stay in touch. He's looking forward to getting your threads and items again next week to post. Mebbe I should take my vacation all at once?

Host Agency AVC Reports Record Third Quarter Sales

America's Vacation Center (AVC), reported record sales for the third quarter of 2007 and the highest sales performance per AVC Independent Affiliate on record, according to Brad Anderson, co-president of AVC."Our Live Leads program continues to expand and we are confident that in 2008 we will be presented with more opportunities to grow. That said, we are committed to adding professional Independent Affiliates to AVC who are serious about making a difference in the way we sell travel," said Anderson. "Our 'Wave Season' has not wavered, and this is a testimony of what's to come - and we couldn't be happier about that," Anderson said, citing AVC's extensive program for its Independent Affiliates as a basic reason for sustained growth.AVC's Anderson foresees ongoing steady success in Q4, spurred by last October's "National Cruise Vacation Month".

Dream ride to Cape, but a nightmare driving home

For thousands of visitors, going to Cape Cod over Memorial Day weekend was much easier and more pleasant than heading home. The new $60 million flyover, which erased the hated rotary at the base of the Sagamore Bridge, smoothed Cape-bound travel on Friday and Saturday. But drivers returning from the Cape Monday found themselves in a worse-than-usual traffic nightmare, with backups that stretched as far as 17 miles to Yarmouth at midafternoon.

To avoid a repeat this summer, state transportation officials said yesterday they plan to install electronic signs urging vacationers to stagger their departure from the Cape as well as their arrival. Officials said they will also look at possible changes to the roadways around Exit 1, where Route 6A merges into Route 6 at the base of the bridge.

Family hopes for recovery

ESCANABA — A former Escanaba resident, now residing in California, continues to recover from a traumatic brain injury caused when he was assaulted this summer. Travis Thetford, 23, a 2002 graduate of Escanaba High School, remains in a coma at Encino Medical Center where he is undergoing physical and speech therapy. The facility is about 24 miles from Pasadena where he resided with his parents, Bryan and Julie Ann (Hirn) Thetford. Travis was transferred to the facility by ambulance on Nov. 12 from Loma Linda University Medical Center where he was being treated for three months following the assault. On Aug. 6, Travis went camping in the Big Bear Lake area for his vacation. The next day, a store owner in Big Bear found him seriously injured on the sidewalk. He had been struck in the back of his head causing three cracks in his skull and major swelling of the brain.
