Outcry over bunker is along party lines

In truth, this is more a description of the past seven years under the Bush administration. Where was Rep. Blackburn in calling for an end to the misplaced and wasted billions in Iraq? And where was conservative Blackburn when this administration increased budget spending and waste to record levels?

I find her remarks disingenuous and false. We had a budget surplus when President Clinton left office in 2001. Where was Marsha when we needed fiscal restraint on the war games of Bush-Cheney?

Broken promises really means broken records an apt description of the past seven years of the mismanaged and inept Bush administration.

Where have you been, Marsha?

U.S. primary season isn't perfect, but works

To the Editor:

I read Richard Aberdeen's missive regarding primary voting, and while I assume his motives are just, his reasoning is flawed, to say the least.

DataPortability.org Workgroup is still born

In practice, all three of these companies (and presumably the many other big players that will now be forced to join) are currently major competitors, so it is to-be-determined how open things will really become for those of us on the outside.

Also wrong.

In all the discussions around this topic, I have yet to see cogent description about how this is going to work given the data privacy laws that exist around the world. Once again, we have a US centric view of the so-called flat earth that fails to recognize there are real laws with real force that will almost certainly kill this initiative stone dead.

Returning to Thomas Otter's explanation of EU law, from my previous post and in particular his reference to the UK Data Protection Act:

Personal data:

Shall be processed fairly and lawfully Shall be obtained only for one or more specified and lawful purposes, and shall not be further processed in any manner incompatible with that purpose(s) Shall be adequate, relevant and not excessive in relation to the purpose or purposes for which they are processed".

Marc Sandalow: Questions for Bush

In his opening statement, Bush frowned on the debate going on in the House over his plan to send more troops to Iraq, saying "people are prejudging the outcome of this.''

As Bush speaks, a group of Republicans are on the House floor voicing their support for the non-binding resolution which opposes his plan.

Bush said he understands Congress' frustration with the war, having spoken to many members.

"They told me they we're dissatisfied with the situation in Iraq. I told them I was dissatisfied with the situation in Iraq.''

Bush opened by talking about his plan to secure Baghdad is an effort to create "political breathing space,'' which may be a good description of what he is attempting with this morning's news conference.

The questions are just starting.

Churchill Fallout: There Are More Like Him

Setting aside Burke's contemptuous tone, let's examine the gaps in his reasoning. Burke's initial objections are throw-away examples of faulty logic. The first, in which he accuses ACTA of post ergo propter hoc thinking, is itself an example of that logical fallacy: Burke sees ACTA seeing what ACTA wants to see because Burke wants to see ACTA that way. But the course descriptions ACTA cites are hardly unique or isolated. There are hundreds of similarly tendentious descriptions published by institutions across the country. They were chosen for their utter typicality, not their uniqueness.

Burke's second objection is remarkably solipsistic — context and specificity are whatever he defines them to be. ACTA quotes course descriptions verbatim, working from exactly what students (and interested parents) read to select a class.
