Student Fires Shots, Takes Hostages At NorCal School
A dispatcher with the Butte County Sheriff's Department said the juvenile surrendered after the incident Friday morning at Oroville's Las Plumas High School. Schools in the Oroville Union High School District were locked down while Deputy Will Brewton, who is stationed at the high school and is a trained hostage negotiator, talked to the hostile student on a cell phone. Student Takes Hostages At NorCal School Police told reporters at a 1 p.m. news conference that the boy was carrying a .22-caliber handgun and pulled it out inside a classroom filled with 20-30 students. OAKLAND Chabot Space & Science Center announced Tuesday that an award of $800,000 in federal money will help it expand its mission to inspire and educate young and old minds about planet Earth and the universe. U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, a member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, secured the money as part of the Department of Defense Appropriations bill signed into law by President George W. Bush last month, said space and science center spokesman Robert Ade. Officials are still discussing how to best use the money, but much of it will go to expanding programs for elementary and middle schoolers. "We are really focused on addressing the crisis that we face in science education," said center Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer Alexander Zwissler.

The Kharkiv-based Register Holding company, which is registrar to the biggest turbine equipment producer Turboatom (Kharkiv), claims Turboatom representatives attempting to seize stock register of their company. Olena Proshutia director of Register Holding has announced this at a press conference in the Ukrainian News press centre. She disclosed that facade of the building of the Register Holding's Kyiv affiliate was scribbled with rough obscenities and locks on entrance doors were filled with construction foam. "Next day Turboatom representatives Cherkaskyi Oleksii Yuriovych and Fedora Volodymyr Leonidovych security manager arrived. They attempted to seize Turboatom stock register system," she told. Proshutia also told that Turboatom representatives intended not to leave the premises of the Register Holding's Kyiv affiliate until they receive the register.
